Shirley Louise Polhemus, 80, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, April 23, 2021, with her family by her side. Born in San Antonio, Tx, on December 28, 1940 to Shirley Woodward and Elizabeth “Betty” Owen, she moved to Rockport with her family at age 7. Shirley resided in Rockport and Fulton, Tx for 73 years.
A graduate of Rockport Fulton High School, she went on to further her education including a double master’s degree in math and science from Texas A&M Corpus Christi. As an ACISD teacher for 26 years she taught many grade levels, was an Assistant Principal, grant writer, DAEP Coordinator, and was President of the Education Foundation for a time. She was a volunteer EMT during her early teaching years. She was on the board and an active church member at New Beginnings Church in Rockport. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
Her greatest joy was traveling and camping in Colorado, Wyoming, and on the Frio River with her family. She loved her birds and her dogs and would provide refuge to practically any animal in need.
She was preceded in death by her parents, step-grandmother Mabel Campbell, her stepfather Robert E. Campbell, and her stepson Michael Polhemus.
She is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 42 years, J. Eddy Polhemus; uncle, Robert Owen of New Braunfels, Texas;Her children Vicky Rice of Rockport, Tx, Valerie Williams of Victoria, Tx, Willie Rice, Jr. of Houston, Tx, Ben Rice of Corpus Christi, Tx, Patrick Polhemus of Oregon, Bryan Polhemus of Rockport, Tx, and Sandra Andrews of Quitman, Tx.; She leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home, 814 E Main St, Rockport, Tx 78382, at 2:00 on Tuesday, April 27, 2021. Grave side service will follow at Fulton Cemetery in Fulton, Tx.
