Rickey Alvarez

On Thursday, November 12, 2020, ​Richard P. “Ric” Alvarez​, loving husband, father, brother and friend, passed away at the age of 65 in Rockport, TX.

Richard was born in 1955 in Houston, TX to Esther Spates Alvarez and Manuel “Chick” Alvarez. He married Linda Graham forty years ago in Seabook, TX. After a stint as expats in Paris, they settled back in the Seabrook area and, in 1982, they welcomed son Travis. Richard was a renaissance man in the truest sense – he was a fencing master, actor, scuba diver, sailplane pilot, voice over artist, professional jouster, radio disc jockey, CivilAir Patrol Cadet, filmmaker, stunt coordinator, amateur photographer, author,award-winning screenwriter, amateur sea glass collector and master pumpkin breadbaker.

He began his career as a television cameraman and later newscaster and disc jockey. He later co-founded and was part-owner of International Action Theater, a professional jousting troupe featuring more than a dozen performers and horses that dazzled audiences at Renaissance Fairs, theme parks and conventions all over the country. He and his fellow knights were the models and inspiration for the artwork that graced the covers of dozens of fantasy novels and Dungeons & Dragons books .Richard is Co-Author of the graphic novel series “After Twilight”, a six-issue comic based on the award winning short of the same name, and the young adult novel “A Christmas Closet.”

His career as a cameraman and filmmaker took him from the ski slopes of Lake Tahoe, to inside a women’s prison in Chowchilla, CA, to an audience with his holiness the Dalai Lama.

Richard wrote, produced and starred in the short film “Half Of Everything” which went on to win a Bronze Remi Award at World Fest Houston Int. Film Festival. His award-winning documentary “American Jouster” premiered at the Breckenridge Film Festival, and was featured as part of the PBS “Video I” series. Richard’s feature scripts have won awards at festivals across the US, and regularly place him in the ‘top ten percent’ at Austin’s Film Festival. He has previously optioned five of his award-winning feature scripts. At the time of his death, he was finishing the pilot episode script for a TV series called Saberfish, and was shopping it with agents.

He was a student of nonviolent communication, fascinated by quantum physics and loved chocolate chip cookies.

In addition to wife Linda and son Travis, Richard is survived by daughter-in-law Hannah; brothers, Tom Alvarez, Jerry Alvarez, Steve Alvarez, Joe Alvarez, Ken Alvarez; and sister Mary Berry; and a host of adoring friends and students around the world.
