Life long resident of Aransas Pass, Tx. Melvin L. Shedd, Sr. passed away January 28, 2019 at the age of 74 at his residence of 48 years.
He was born Melvin L. Shedd, Sr on November 04, 1944 in Aransas Pass, Texas to Riley Ace Shedd Sr. and Kizzie Shedd.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents, his oldest brother Riley Shedd, Jr of Aransas Pass, fraternal twin siblings Dessie Mae Tomlinson of Roseburg, Oregon, brother Jessie Ray Shedd, of Round Rock, Texas, and sister Dicy Smith of Aransas Pass, Texas.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Martha Ann Shedd of Aransas Pass, Texas; older brother Randall Shedd of Sinton, Texas and younger brother Ace Shedd of San Antonio, Texas; his two sons Melvin Shedd, Jr. and wife Tonya Shedd of League City, Texas, Johnny Shedd and wife Nicol Shedd of Shelbyville, Texas: three grandchildren, Brennan Shedd, Darren Shedd, and Paige Shedd, Makenzie Gass, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Melvin was born and raised in Aransas Pass where he spent his entire life. He attended school in the Aransas Pass Independent School District where he graduated high school in 1965. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he proudly served 2 years. He acquired the rank of Sergeant and was a member of the 82nd Airborne.
After his military service Melvin returned home and on November 10th of 1967 married Martha Ann Durham where they spent the next 51 years devoted in marriage. In 1968 a first son, Melvin Jr., was born and a second son, Johnny, in 1970 was born.

Melvin began his career in law enforcement in 1968 as a dispatcher for the city of Aransas Pass. In 1972 he took a Deputy Sheriff's position for the San Patricio County Sheriff's Department. In latter of 1977 he ran for the position of Constable for San Patricio County and served in this capacity until his appointment to Chief of Police in 1979. He served the community of Aransas Pass, Texas for the next 24 years as Chief of police until his retirement in 2003. Upon his retirement in 2003, Melvin served in law enforcement for a total of 36 years. During his tenure as Chief of Police he had been recognized as one of the longest tenured Chief of Police in the state of Texas.

In his retirement he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family. He was able to travel and take life at a slower, less hectic pace. He enjoyed fishing with his sons and grandsons. Melvin shared a special relationship with his granddaughter and bonded instantly. He would frequently travel to attend the grandchildren's football, softball, track, and band functions. Melvin remained in the area where he was born and raised and spent his time between properties in Aransas Pass and East Texas. He was always willing to help family and friends. Melvin always was up for a good laugh and a joke. He was very talented and had many skills that he passed on to his sons and grandchildren. One of his favorite past times was tending to his bee hives and became well versed in their care. He loved to travel to mountainous areas and be close to the outdoors prospecting and exploring. He was a humble man that valued his faith, loved his family, stood for what was right, an excellent husband, father, brother, friend, and uncle.
