Martin Lynn

June 25, 1925 — September 7, 2020

How do you describe one of the most interesting men in the world? For starters, he was born June 26, 1925, to Fred and Bonnie Lynn in Ranger, Texas. He attended Catholic boarding schools in the woodlands of Arkansas. Grades 1-10 at the Franciscan Morris School, then graduating from the esteemed Benedictine Subiaco Academy. Both were also working farms. The kindness of the Brothers and the country environment were a life long influence. In 1943, after high school he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was a navigator on a B-17 Flying Fortress. He had vivid memories of the smells of aviation fuel, gunpowder, and airsickness. After the war he attended Tulane University and Texas Tech University, and settled in Corpus Christi, where he built motels on North Beach, The Lynn Motor Inn, and on Shoreline Drive, The Sand and Sea Motel. When an opportunity involved a challenge, a risk, and the added benefit of making a pile of money, he was all in. An entrepreneur from the get go, he joyfully plunged into ventures in motels, apartment houses, agriculture seed, a gold mine in British Guiana, a water drilling company in Mexico, a pipe yard, a carnival, breeding registered Simmental cattle, oil and gas interests, and the stock market. He excelled at growing exotic hibiscus, playing gin, enthusiastic story telling, cooking fried shrimp, challenging attitudes and opinions he did not agree with, absorbing knowledge from historical novels, owning a ranch, traveling the world, and loving his wife Lynn, and all of his family. He was also great at climbing mountains, downhill skiing, hunting, fishing, and hitting golf balls. He was both exceedingly generous and a famous penny pincher. After 95 years, on September 7, 2020, his spirit was released from his worn out body and he is free to experience the magnificent universe. To honor Martin please perform an unexpected act of kindness for someone. Left to remember Martin are his wife, Lynn Lovell Lynn, son Kelly Lynn and wife Karen, daughters Elaine Miller and husband Buz, and Penny Amaral, stepdaughters Ashley Buchanan and Dana Lovell, and stepson John Buchanan and wife Dawn. Also, seven grandchildren, three step grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, daughters Mary Lea Lynn and Jennifer Kay Lynn, and stepson Brad Buchanan. Private services with full military honors were held at the Coastal Bend Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi on September 16, 2020.
