Maree Fischer

August 31, 1936 — April 26, 2021

Rockport

Maree Anne (M.A.) Fischer passed peacefully from this life on Monday, April 26, 2021. A service celebrating her life will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 7th at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home in Rockport.

M.A. was born to Ralph and Dorothy (Colwell) Webber on August 31, 1936, in Peoria, Illinois. An only child, she grew up in Toulon, Illinois until 1952, when the family moved to Kewanee. Her magnetic personality made its debut early and, in 1954, she was elected homecoming queen before graduating from Kewanee High School.

Her caring soul and wise, maternal spirit were also on display early as, following her mother’s tuberculosis diagnosis, she would stay home and care for her until her death in 1958. There was joy that year as well as, on May 17, 1958, M.A. would marry Peter Fischer and welcome his younger brother, John, in to raise as her own alongside the three spirited children that she and Pete would later bring into the world.

Her combination of sharp wit, understated elegance, and unflappable determination made her a natural trailblazer, and as she garnered much-deserved respect, it afforded her the opportunity to do something that she would enjoy throughout her life – make a positive impact on her community. She became Neponset’s first female school board member and was a very progressive and outspoken advocate for the children. In 1975, she embraced her inner Texan when the family moved, first to Fort Worth and later to Waco, where she managed Fischer International. She and Pete would travel the world together, a marriage of brilliant minds that would have a lasting impact on the construction field, and the stories she collected along the way were priceless gems; the evidence of a woman who had earned the respect of a male-dominated industry.

In 2000, Pete and M.A. migrated further south and built their dream home in the Heron’s Roost community of Rockport, Texas, quickly finding their place in the local community and collecting a new group of dear friends. M.A. was known, according to her neighbors, as the unofficial Heron’s Roost Historian because she maintained meticulous records of the neighborhood goings-on, but everyone knew that her true pride and joy was her yard, always filled with beautiful plants and flowers to attract butterflies and her beloved hummingbirds. Ever the proud hostess, the Fischer home hosted many visitors, whether for conversation over a glass of wine, a delicious taste of her incredible cooking, or a front-porch view of the full moon rising over Aransas Bay. She settled readily into coastal life, and it brings great comfort to her family to know that she and Pete spent their final 20 years in a place they loved, surrounded by people they adored.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Rebecca and husband, Paul, Michael and wife, Nichole, and Matthew and wife, Dedra, as well as her brother-in-law, John and wife, Faye, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends.

There is much to be missed about M.A.; enough that if you asked her family and friends, you might get a different answer from each one. She was a constellation of sometimes-contradictory attributes that coalesced to create a unique and phenomenal woman. Her no-nonsense business attitude was in direct competition with her warm and generous heart. The grace and elegance with which she conducted herself suggested a composed dignity that often disguised the sometimes-wicked sense of humor with which her family and friends were so familiar, and a fantastic, cackling laugh that lit up her whole face as well as any room she was in. An expert in the art of verbal communication, M.A. had a gift for reading a person or a moment and finding the perfect tone and message for any occasion. While an excellent

storyteller and conversationalist, there was, perhaps, nothing more beautiful than her written correspondence, filled with her looping script and carefully chosen words. Often, these were thank-you notes, as she was a firm believer in expressions of gratitude and would work hard to pass this tradition to her children and grandchildren. M.A.’s family, friends, and the Rockport community now join together to express our gratitude for the life of a woman who left us, and the world, better and more beautiful than she found it.

In honor of M.A.’s love for the coastal wildlife, donations may be made to the Rockport/Fulton Wings Rescue Center, whose mission includes the rescue and rehabilitation of injured birds, a nursery for abandoned and orphaned juvenile birds, and community awareness to promote conservation and compassion for avian welfare. The Wings Rescue Center serves Rockport, Fulton, and the Live Oak Peninsula.
