August 23, 1964 — September 26, 2022

Aransas Pass, Texas

ARANSAS PASS, Lorna "Lori" Ellen Schonhoeft Smith, age 58, passed away on September 26, 2022, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, during which her husband, Lonnie, never left her side.  Lori was born in Sinton, Texas, on August 23, 1964, to her loving parents, Anton "Tony" and Evie "Bea" Schonhoeft.  She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, teacher, and friend.

Lori grew up in Ingleside, where she excelled in academics and band.  With her mother and father's help, she raised many 4-H animal projects and competed in UIL Academic Competitions.  Lori always had a very special bond with her parents, creating countless memories for us all.  She graduated with the highest honors as Valedictorian from Ingleside High School in 1982.   She earned an associate's degree from Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, a bachelor's Degree from Purdue University in Indianapolis, and a Master's Degree from A&M Corpus Christi.

Lori met the love of her life, Lonnie Smith, and they were married on June 10, 2005.  They were blessed with a beautiful marriage and were known to call each other baby affectionately.  But they were more than partners; they were best friends, always joking around with one another.  They went on many traveling adventures with their children, Ben and Josh, and their close friends.   Lori loved spending time with her family by going to movies with Ben or enjoying a weekend barbeque together that Lonnie had prepared.  She was the rock that always held her family together through the good and trying times.

Lori was a dedicated educator in the community.  She taught in many areas of study for 27 years throughout the Coastal Bend.  Her most recent position was at Ingleside High School, her alma mater, as the Health Science Teacher, where she helped prepare students for their future careers in medicine.  She retired from teaching in May of 2020.   Lori was passionate about teaching her students and striving to be a role model for everyone in her life.  During her last stay at the hospital, several of her past students had the opportunity to return the favor and provide her with excellent health care.  She made a lasting impact on her students' lives.

Lori will always be remembered for her quick wit, kind heart, love for all animals, and the distinct ability to correct her family's grammar with a smile.  She loved to travel, see new things, and experience life to the fullest.  She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her, but the memories will live in our hearts forever.  Lori was a faithful Christian, and we know that she is in Heaven celebrating with Jesus and the rest of her family and friends that have passed before her.

Lori is preceded in death by her father, Tony Schonhoeft, and is survived by her husband Lonnie Smith, sons Ben McIntyre and Josh Smith, mother Bea Schonhoeft, brother Ross Schonhoeft, and her sister-in-law, Annette Schonhoeft.  She is also survived by her best friends Patrice Yardley(Jerry), Niki Simpson, nieces Ashley Lewis(Allen), Kelsey Kuehler, Brooke Garibay(Robert), nephews Matt Kuehler, Hayden Schonhoeft, her great nieces and nephews, extended family and a host of faithful friends.

Our family would like to thank the staff at Harbor Hospice in Portland, Texas, for their care and comfort for Lori during her last days.  These dedicated professionals genuinely are angels on earth.

Please join us in celebrating her life on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at 10 AM at the Charlie Marshall Funeral Home in Aransas Pass, Texas, with a graveside service to follow at San Ignacio Cemetery in Ingleside, Texas.
