Janet Minnia

January 29, 1932 — March 9, 2020

Port Aransas

Janet Land Minnia was born January 29, 1932 in San Antonio, TX to Russell and Betty Land. She had one sister, Betty Lou.  From an early age she loved bowling, and it was at the bowling alley that she met her husband, Bill Minnia.  They were married on her 21st birthday in 1953 and were married for 47 years, until his death in 2000. Janet had three daughters, Sandi Tipps, Bonnie Haecker, and Terri Minnia. She was “Mimi” to 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and an expected great-great grandchild.

She was a life-long learner and dedicated educator for over 30 years. She began teaching preschool in 1966 at Dan-Ann-Jim Preschool and later became co-owner of the school.  She also taught as a part-time teacher at the Learning Nook, which served students experiencing difficulty in reading.  She was honored for her dedication and service to her children’s school with an honorary PTA Lifetime Membership.

Janet was also a creative artist.  She loved drawing, stained glass, quilting, and woodworking. She always had a project or two or three in the works. She loved carousels and had quite a collection of carousel figurines. She was a member of the San Antonio Carousel Foundation and used her artistic talents working to restore the Carousel from Playland Park.

She lived life to the fullest and was a bright light to all who knew her. In 2007 she won the Regional San Antonio Bunco World Tour, and represented her area at the National tournament in Las Vegas. In 2018 she moved with her daughters to Port Aransas, TX.  There, she loved watching the dolphins, pelicans, and other gulf coast wildlife.  Beloved by her family, friends, and generations of students, Janet leaves a legacy of love and kindness that will live on.
