Elida “Connie” Garcia

Elida “Connie” Garcia passed into the arms of our Lord, June 30, 2020.  Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Friend, and business owner Connie was known to touch the hearts of all she met.

She was a faithful servant of God and lived with a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“The Little Bunny” was born in McAllen, Texas on October 11, 1944 to Domingo and Adelaida Sotelo and was the youngest of seven children; Dr. Oscar (Rosie) Sotelo, Rosario (Mike) Vega, Maria Alicia Sotelo, and is preceded in death by her parents and older siblings Domingo(Gloria) Sotelo Jr, Jose (Estella) Sotelo, and Angelica (Alfredo) Cantu. Filled with endless energy and a devotion to her faith, family, and community from an early age, she could be found at church, at the front of her high school band, working at the local dime store, or decorating and riding on various parade floats as a winner of many community contests.

An educated woman, she attended Pan American University and graduated with a degree in Marine Science from the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. It is there that she met Gene Garcia, of Kingsville, Texas, who would become her husband on August 24, 1968 and would remain so for over 52 years until her passing. She was blessed with two children Gene Garcia Jr, of Houston, Texas and Andrea (Dr. Diego) Restrepo of Sherman, Texas. She found pure joy in being “Honey” to her two grandchildren, Natalia Sofia Restrepo and Diego Marcelo Restrepo. After her faith, her family was the most important thing in her life; and like most other things she did, she gave to them endlessly with a joy and love that was both incredible and unbelievable in its scope.

A close second to the happiness she received from her family was the joy she took in her business in downtown Rockport. Connie started working at Hidden Treasures under its previous owner in 1973 after moving to Rockport with her growing family. It was there that she developed her love for the Rockport area and the many customers that came through the Hidden Treasures’ doors. In the late 70s, she bought Hidden Treasures and has run it ever since, making it the oldest ladies boutique in Rockport. She truly loved going to work each day and was always excited to shop with and for her customers, many of whom became close personal friends.

Always willing to volunteer her time and numerous talents to her parish and community, Connie served on multiple community and religious organizations such as Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Sacred Heart Catholic School board, the Sacred Heart Choir, the Sacred Heart Church decoration committee, the Key Allegro Garden Club, the Rockport Garden Club, the Aransas County Education Foundation, the Aransas County Art Association, the Aransas County Historical District, the Rockport Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Merchants Association, the Rockport Art Festival, and various other community organizations.

Connie loved being outside in her garden and meticulously tended to her orchids and dessert roses, to name a few. She regularly shared her talent of gourmet cooking with family and friends as yet another way to enjoy and care for others. She had a great love of the arts and appreciated Mariachi music, symphonic music, the New York Metropolitan Opera, and the New York City Ballet.

She is survived by three loving sisters in law, Maria Mercedes Garcia Salinas, Maria Ines Garcia, and Gertrudis Garcia Escobar and numerous nieces and nephews.

The void that has been caused by her passing will not be filled.
