Rockport

Cynthia Gandy Thompson, passed in peace at the age of 84 on January 4, 2021 in Rockport, Texas.  She had suffered a stroke in mid-December 2020.

She was born June 9, 1936 in rural Northeast Texas, Franklin County, to R. B. and Dahlia Gandy.  Along with her parents and 3 brothers, she helped on the family farm during the depression years picking cotton, canning vegetables and raising farm animals.  She married young, had 2 children David Thompson of Austin and Donna Thompson Broach of Rockport while gradually obtaining her GED, Bachelor and Master’s degrees, and CPA certification.  She worked in the accounting field for over 50 years before retiring to Rockport, her “Paradise” as she called it, where she enjoyed the salt air and walks on the beach.   Education was highly valued and she was greatly supportive to her children and grandchildren as they all are college graduates, some with advanced degrees. Her hobbies through the years included water skiing and camping with her children, snow skiing and international travel with her grandchildren and keeping a lovely home and garden that all felt welcome to visit.   She was a die-hard football fan, especially high school and college games.

The greatest commitment during her adult years was to her church community.  She was a lifelong Baptist until moving to Rockport where she found fellowship and became a member of the First United Methodist Church.  She was active as a Sunday School and VBS teacher, church greeter and volunteer at the community thrift shop, Castaways, until health concerns limited her ability to participate.  Daily she would get in her “prayer closet” to pray for family and friends.  Throughout the years, she made many wonderful friendships through her church family who she valued greatly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers R.B. Jr and Robert Jackson Gandy.  She is survived by her brother Winfred Gandy (Jeanette) of Edna, TX.  Her children David Thompson of Austin, Donna Broach (Micki) of Rockport.  Grandchildren Josh Broach (Jaton), Ryan Thompson (Robin), Sarah Broach Sturm (Anthony), Lauren Thompson Madden (Wales), and Marshall Thompson (Meagan). She also had greatgrands which were the light of her life.  She was deeply loved and will be missed as our mom, Mamoi/Memoi, and Mamo.

Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.  Proverbs 31:31

A private celebration of her life will be scheduled at a later date.  Donations may be made in her name to First United Methodist Church children’s ministry at 801 E. Main St.  Rockport, Texas 78382 or a charity of your choice.
