Charley Jane True Garrett

Charley Jane was born on April 18, 1940, in Breckenridge, Texas, to Mattie Mae Alexander and John William True. She was the youngest of four daughters, arriving 10 minutes after her twin sister June. She was raised in San Antonio, Texas and graduated from Harlendale High School. Jane moved with her family to Rockport in 1969 where she raised her 3 daughters and stayed active in the community – especially following them in their many school activities.

Jane worked for many years as the secretary at Rockport Elementary. She attended the First United Methodist Church of Rockport and was very active in the life of her church, serving on various committees as well as being a lay leader. She was instrumental in guiding the youth of the church, serving as the youth director for seven years and teaching Sunday school to both the Junior High students and young adults.

In May of 1987 she married Rev. Leonard Garrett and lived in Falfurrias where she assisted him as he served the Falfurrias and Premont churches. On his retirement, they returned to Rockport where Jane continued her activities in the church serving with the United Methodist Women and at Castaways. She was very creative and made all sorts of crafts to sell in the annual church bazaar.

Jane was a true servant. Her goal in life was to help others and she did so with a smile on her face. Our fondest memories include fishing, feeding the hummingbirds, playing in the big backyard where we could run, climb the trees and stay out of the bluebonnets! The many hours spent coloring or creating crafts when visiting her. The old blue beach car that she used to transport us to the beach and the lemon drop candies you could always find stashed in the car! She loved to read and passed on her love of reading and creating to her children and grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her spouse, Rev. Leonard Garrett; sisters, Ruth Anderson and Treva Wright; and great-granddaughter, Elphaba Ray Espinosa.

She is survived by daughters, Penny Rossman Espinosa (Raul), Virginia Rossman Jarzombek (Michael), and DeeAine Rossman Watson (Alan); seven grandchildren: Lynda Espinosa Lind (Myron), Edward Espinosa (Audrey), Gregory Jarzombek (Luyi), Cordell Jarzombek (Rebecca), Courtland Johnson (Danielle), Emily Johnson, and Ashley Meeks; three great grandchildren: Myles and Tyler Lind, and Mathilda Jarzombek; Stepchildren: Ann Garrett Kaiser; Lane Garrett, Celeste Garrett, and Edwin Garrett; her twin sister, June True Neatherlin; and many nieces and nephews.
