Albert Abel Jr.

d. January 6, 2022

Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Albert William Louis Abel, Jr., 82, of Ingleside, TX, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on January 6, 2022, after a challenging battle with a rare blood disorder.

Albert was born on September 17, 1939, to Albert and Evelyn Abel in Bryant Station, TX. He graduated from Buckholts High School in May 1957 and joined the United States Army on July 4th at the age of seventeen. He served on active duty for three years including an eighteen-month deployment in Korea. After being discharged, he attended Texas A&M University, earning a degree in Biology and Physical Education, and graduating in May 1965. Albert began his career in education at Ingleside ISD as a coach and biology teacher. He earned his Master of Science degree and administrator’s certificate at Texas A&M University, Kingsville, in 1975. This led to new roles at Ingleside ISD, including Principal of Elizabeth Cook Elementary School, the district’s Curriculum Director and later the Director of Technology. After a career of more than thirty-five years, he retired from Ingleside ISD in 2002.

Albert married Jerrie Ann Rawls of Rogers, TX in 1959. They have three children: Cherie Renee Strohmeyer (Andy – husband), Lowery Thomas Rawls Abel (Rachel – wife) and Joshua Andrew Abel (Rebecca – wife) and nine grandchildren: Bailey Elizabeth Strohmeyer, Sullivan Blake Strohmeyer (Sully), Jaxson Andrew Abel Strohmeyer (Jax), Joanna Kate Abel, Kelsey Grace Strohmeyer, Nathanael Albert William Abel (Nathan), Lowery Thomas Rawls Abel, Jr. (L.T.), Megyn Brooke Abel, and Ezekiel Andrew Abel (Zeke).

Albert had many interests including fishing, woodworking, snow skiing, gardening, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. After his graduation from Texas A&M University, Albert continued to be an active and proud supporter of many Aggie organizations, including The Corps of Cadets, Parson’s Mounted Calvary and the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band, and followed his sons across the state each time the corps “stepped off” and every time the band “formed at the north end of Kyle Field.” For twenty-five plus years (and counting), Albert and Jerrie were Texas A&M University football season ticket holders and, until recently, never missed a game at Kyle Field, often attending with their children and grandchildren. Albert served the Lord in many church roles including Deacon, Music, Choir and Drama Leader, Senior High Sunday School Teacher and Director, and various other roles. He was never one to be idle.

Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Evelyn Abel, his younger sister, Dottie Ann and his grandson Timothy Enoch Abel. It was Albert’s decision to donate his body to the Texas A&M Medical School so that he could continue to participate in the education of young people, one of his lifelong missions.

A Celebration of His Life will be held at First Baptist Church, Portland, TX on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at 10:30AM. Should such be desired, donations to the Samaritan’s Purse Organization (in lieu of flowers and in Albert’s name) would be appreciated. A memorial page has been set up for Albert at https://www.samaritanspurse.org.
