Rockport

William “Bill” Smith was born on November 18, 1957, in Rockport, Texas, and passed away on April 23, 2026; a proud fourth-generation Rockport native, he carried a deep love for the town and people who shaped his life.

Growing up, Bill spent his childhood fishing with his grandfather, Captain Floyd Smith, working at Key Allegro Marina, and playing football. When he wasn’t in Rockport, he was hunting with his grandfather on leases across South Texas and spending as much time as possible at the Agarita Ranch, a place he loved deeply throughout his life.

Bill graduated from Rockport-Fulton High School in 1976 and immediately began working on tugboats with Jackson Marine. He later attended the University of Texas at Austin, putting himself through school by working on the boats during the summers and managing hunting leases in the fall.

After earning a degree in Finance in 1980, Bill continued his career with Jackson Marine, working in Louisiana, Mexico, and Bahrain. He loved traveling and experiencing new places, but Texas always called him home. Bill returned to Austin in 1986 where he reconnected with Margaret “Margo” Woodbury; the two were married at the Agarita Ranch in 1990. A year later they welcomed their daughter, Sarah, into the world on Bill’s birthday, and in 2000 welcomed their son, William “Will”.

In 1997, Bill moved his family back to Rockport to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps as a professional fishing guide. For 20+ years, he guided clients, family, and friends across Aransas, Copano, and San Antonio Bays, sharing his love of the water and coastal life with all who joined him. He was active in Ducks Unlimited, CCA, and many fishing tournaments. Bill was grateful to raise his children in Rockport, surrounded by family and lifelong friends. A devoted sports fan, he could always be found cheering on the Pirates on Friday nights and his Texas Longhorns on Saturdays.

Bill never met a stranger. Whether sharing stories, offering advice, or enjoying a cold beer and a laugh, Bill brought warmth, humor, and friendship wherever he went. He will be remembered for his love of family, the outdoors, and the many friendships he cherished over a life well lived.

Bill is survived by his mother, Carol Smith of Rockport; his daughter, Sarah (Philip) of Austin; his son, Will Smith of Rockport; his granddaughters, Lily, Elle, and Penny; his brother, Bob (Abel) of Rockport; and his sister, Kathy (Michael) of Rockport, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, May 16, at 11:00 a.m. at Key Allegro Yacht Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pirate Club, PO Box 907 Rockport 78381.
