Suzanne G. Meglen

December 5, 1961 — February 8, 2026

Portland, Texas

After 64 years of life, Suzanne G. (MacDonald) Meglen passed away peacefully on February 8th, 2026 surrounded by her children, following a five-year battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Suzanne was born on December 5th, 1961 in Port Clinton, Ohio but spent her early years in Jamestown, Rhode Island attending Portsmouth High School. She then studied psychology at Roger Williams College in Bristol before moving to Newport, Rhode Island where she would meet the love of her life, Thomas L. Meglen Jr. They were married on September 6th, 1986 and after a brief time in South Carolina, Tom’s service in the US Navy brought the happy couple and their growing family to Portland, Texas where they would spend the rest of their lives.

As the mother of five kids, with a husband often serving overseas, Suzanne was a master of motherhood. She juggled years of soccer practices, choir concerts, and sleepovers with a smile. She made it look easy. Her family brought her more joy than anything in her life and she will always be remembered for her love, empathy, and endless ability to do it all. Her motto was, “I’m just doing the best I can with what I’ve got to work with!”

Suzanne was a cherished member of her community, known for her enduring kindness and compassion. She worked as a pre-school teacher at the Methodist Day School and Open Arms Child Development Center where she touched the lives of countless children. She spent many years as an active member of St. Christopher’s By The Sea Episcopal Church, sharing her knack for nurture during several summers of Vacation Bible School.

Forever the caretaker, Suzanne devoted her later years to caring for her mother during the end of a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, then fought side-by-side with her husband before Multiple System Atrophy took his life in February of 2021. Her dedication to prioritize and support the people (and pets) she loved most in life will never be forgotten.

The Meglen house was, and is, a haven for her beloved animals. Several dogs, countless cats, and even the occasional bunny or “micro” pig, found comfort and happiness in the home she created. Suzanne enjoyed reading mystery and suspense novels, getting wrapped up in a good crime drama, or simply rewatching Jurassic Park for the umpteenth time. She loved a good cup of black coffee (especially with a few powdered donuts), collecting miniatures and all things cute or tiny, and above all, spending time with her adoring grandchildren.

She is survived by her five children, Shaun Meglen, Lindsay Woodruff, Kurtis Meglen, Kelly Curran (Cameron), and Ryan Meglen; and her five grandchildren Zoe Hamilton, Thomas Meglen, Steven Woodruff, Kason Curran and soon to be Conrad Curran; along with her sisters Deborah MacDonald, and Meredith (Darnell) MacDonald. She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas L Meglen Jr.; brother, Alfred J MacDonald; mother, Deborah Furtado, and grandparents, Francis J and Alberta (Bertie) West.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at St. Christopher’s By The Sea Episcopal Church on Saturday, March 21st at 11:00 AM.

Suzanne was a lifetime guardian member of the ASPCA, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made there or to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
