Russell (Russ) Buck

January 9, 1940 — June 9, 2021

Rockport

Russell (Russ) Franklin Buck passed away peacefully at home on June 9 th , 2021, in Rockport, Texas.  Russ was born on January 9th, 1940, in Clarion, Iowa, to Russell and Margaret Buck.  They moved to Eaton, Colorado, where Russ graduated from high school in 1958.  Following high school, he completed an enlistment in the Army and moved to Fort Collins, Colorado. While in Fort Collins, Russ began his 45 years of service as a peace officer, first with the city police department for nearly 20 years and then the Larimer County Sheriff’s Department. While a Deputy Sheriff, he specialized as a K-9 officer, patrolled the vast mountains of western Larimer County, and finished as a community officer in the township of Wellington.  Russ loved people and had a reputation for tact and respect during his career in law enforcement, especially towards those who wound up in handcuffs.  He retired in 2005 and moved to the sleepy seaside town of Rockport Texas with Glenna whom he had met at the Sheriffs Department and married in 1988.  After a long bout with cancer, Glenna, passed away in 2008.  Russ met Charlene Chestnut, an Iowa native who matched Russ’s wit, and married her in 2012.  Charlene passed away in January 2020.

A true cowboy, and avid outdoorsman Russ broke horses, roped cattle, and loved the Rocky Mountains.  Giving back to the community he led many a pack-trip expedition for the Explorer Scouts, local students, and eventually the trips turned into an annual affair with his father, son, nephew, and son-in-law.  Not content with just a few outdoor pursuits, Russ was an expert skier, a scuba diver, and after moving to Rockport learned to sail.  More than anything Russ will be remembered for his ability to spin his many adventures into riveting, funny, and inspiring stories.  He was a man of unyielding Christian morals, ethics, was approachable and loving.  He was a true friend, a wonderful brother, and a very proud father.

He is survived by his daughter Lisa (Robert) Jeffries in Loveland, Colorado, son Major Robert (Andrea) Buck USMC in Jacksonville, Florida, grandchildren Jocelyn and Jacob Robert Jeffries, Briony and Westley Buck, sisters Susan Buck and Kathryn Foley MaGie, and nephews David Storhaug and Michael Storhaug.

Russ is preceded in death by his parents and son, Brian Buck.
