January 19, 1943 — September 4, 2025

Rockport

Major General (Ret) Frank Fitch Henderson died on September 4th, 2025, at home with his family and caretakers. General Henderson was born to Frances Fitch Henderson and Francis Tennille Henderson, Jr. in San Antonio, Texas on 19 January 1943. He grew up in San Antonio and graduated from Alamo Heights High School. He attended the University of Texas where he was active in Sigma Chi Social Fraternity and the Army ROTC Program, which inducted him into the Pershing Rifles, and Scabbard and Blade. He met his wife, Penny Lee Mood, at Texas in 1962 and spent the next two years convincing her she should marry him. The last week in August 1964 was the most significant of his life: he graduated from Texas with a BBA, commissioned as a 2LT in the US Army, and married Penny Lee. They entered the Army in October 1964 and served until August 1995. His service took him to Vietnam (twice), Germany (twice), Canada, and Korea. While in the Army, General Henderson attended the University of Georgia, where he received an MBA and was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma academic honor societies. His military schooling included the Command and General Staff College, the Canadian Forces Staff College, and the Army War College. He commanded troops on six separate occasions, in three different countries, and served in the Pentagon in the Office of the Chief of Staff, Army. When he retired, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the highest military medal for service. In 2014 he was selected to the Quartermaster Hall of Fame.

General Henderson retired with his wife, Penny Lee, to Rockport and had been active in the Humane Society and Adoption Center (HSAC). He served on the Boards of the Education Foundation, the Loyal Longhorns, and the Key Allegro Homeowner’s Association, and was a member of St. Peter's Church. His favorite retirement past times were being with his wife, family gatherings and spending time with his friends.

General Henderson is survived by his wife, Penny Lee; his children Frank Fitch Jr and Donna Borak Henderson, and Elizabeth Henderson Green and Ronald Joseph Green Jr; and his six grandchildren: Frank "Trey" Henderson III, Ronald Joseph III "RJ" and Emily Hipp Green, Katherine Elizabeth "Katie" Henderson, Reese Charles Green, Wyatt Kyle Henderson, and Devin Henderson Green. Also surviving him are his brother Francis Tennille Henderson Ill of Seguin, and his sister-in-law Marilyn Dietze of Cuero. His grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

General Henderson requested that no flowers be sent, but rather contributions made to the Humane Society or St. Peter's Episcopal Church. The memorial service will be for close friends at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home in Rockport on September 27th at 2:00 p.m. He will be inurned in a family service in the columbarium at his boyhood church, Christ Episcopal Church in San Antonio at a later date.
