Rockport

Kurt Alan Kangas Sr., 66, passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 2026, after a long illness. Kurt was born on August 1, 1959, in Wausau, Wisconsin, and spent his early childhood in Duluth, Minnesota before moving to Dallas, Texas at the age of 11 where spent his high school years and early adulthood. After meeting his wife Suzanna Moroles, they made their journey down to Rockport, TX where their creative careers began with the Moroles family business. Before beginning his work in the arts, Kurt was a master plumber, a trade that reflected the precision, dedication, and strong work ethic he carried throughout his life. He also had a passion for architecture and earned an associate degree in the field, something that further shaped his creative eye, appreciation for design, and ability to bring ideas to life with both artistry and technical skill. He spent nearly three decades working alongside renowned sculptor Jesús Moroles as his brother-in-law, collaborator, and trusted right-hand man. From 1987 until Jesús’ tragic passing in 2015, Kurt played a vital role in the creation, fabrication, and installation of many large-scale granite sculptures and projects across the country. In 2017, Kurt and his wife Suzanna founded Moroles Art Co. in Rockport to continue preserving and honoring their careers in the Moroles legacy through restoration and preservation. Additionally, Kurt created one-of-a kind works which captured his individual creative vision, passion and artistry. This work was priority throughout his very last days. His craftsmanship and deep understanding of stonework has earned the respect and admiration of many throughout the fine art industry. Most importantly, he was steadfast and was a jack of all trades, someone with knowledge and skill across countless areas, and the kind of neighbor and friend who was always willing to lend a helping hand. His influence and contributions quietly touched countless lives and communities over the years. Kurt grew up ice skating and playing hockey, he enjoyed teaching his kids how to skate and ski. In between it all, he loved boating on the water, golfing, playing pool, camping, and listening to music. Above all else, Kurt loved his family deeply and spending time with his grandkids was his deepest joy. He is survived by his beloved wife, Suzanna Moroles; his children, Kurt Alan Kangas Jr. (Michael Smith), Laura Kangas Patrick (Chris Patrick), and Victoria Moroles Kangas (Jordan Wilson); and his cherished grandchildren, Camilla Patrick, Finley Patrick, and Isabel Patrick. He is also lovingly remembered by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, extended family, and the many lifelong friends and colleagues who were touched by his life.

He was preceded in death by father, Earl Kangas, mother Irene Johnson and siblings Barbara Jo Odden, Bonnie Ann Locker and Michael Kangas. Kurt will be remembered for his creativity, resilience, humility, and the care he gave so freely to those around him. His legacy lives on not only through the art and projects he helped bring into the world, but through the family, friendships, and community he loved so deeply. A service honoring Kurt’s life will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 10:00 AM at First United Methodist Church followed by a Celebration of Life.
