John Dixon Fulton of Rockport, Texas, died Saturday, September 26, 2026 of extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer. He was 78 years old. Mr. Fulton was born in Columbus, Ohio, to Allan Phillips Fulton and Lily Burnet Fulton, but spent much of his childhood in Virginia, upstate New York, and North Carolina. He was named for his grandfather (1865-1930), a native of Belfast, Ireland, who emigrated to Hardin County, Ohio, at age 18.

A graduate of East Carolina University, Mr. Fulton began his working life as a reporter and editor for general-circulation daily newspapers, moving later in his career to financial journalism and finally to Wall Street itself. He began his career at these North Carolina papers: New Bern Sun-Journal, Fayetteville Times (where he met his beloved wife, the former Susan Bonnie Miller), Burlington Times-News, and Winston-Salem Journal.

After relocating to the New York City area, he worked for the Record daily newspaper of Bergen County, N.J., the American Banker trade newspaper, and Knight-Ridder Financial electronic news service before joining Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, where he became a supervisory analyst in equity research. He ended his career in the same role for Lazard Capital Markets. He was a past board member of the New York Financial Writers Association, the Friends of Connie Hagar, and the South Rockport Neighbors, where he helped reestablish the scholarship fund. He was briefly a docent at the Fulton Mansion before becoming ill with cancer.

Mr. Fulton and his wife had one beloved child, Emma Susan Fulton, an industrial engineer, who predeceased him, as did his sisters Carva Fulton, Alice F. Amerine, Eileen F. Watson, and Naida F. Tatman. He is survived by his wife, his brother, Allan, of Tryon, North Carolina, sisters-in-law Emily Wall and Nancy Bolten, brothers-in-law Wesley Wall and John Bolten, and a large extended family.

A celebration of life will be held on October 10, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home in Rockport, Texas with a private inurnment at Rockport Cemetery at a later date.
