Jean Ivey

Jean Nunn Ivey, 91, of Taft, Texas passed away on Monday, March 19, 2018, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Jean was born July 4, 1926, in Fort Worth, Texas to Jennie Rooney Nunn, and Grover Cleveland Nunn. She always said it wasn't until she was 6 or 7 before she found out the fireworks weren't for her. She lived in Fort Stockton throughout her childhood and attended school there until high school. She graduated from Hockaday School for Girls in Dallas, Texas in 1946 and then entered The University of Texas at Austin where her mother had also attended. On June 11. 1947 she married Mercer Treadway Ivey of Taft, Texas and they moved to the family farm in Taft where they lived and raised their 4 children.

Jean was very active in her church as well as the community. She was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder, a deacon, was church historian and held most offices in the Presbyterian Women. She helped to organize and produce the first live nativity at the church in Taft. She was also instrumental in having the sanctuary designated a historical site.

Her community volunteering spanned decades, during WWII she served with the Red Cross as a Staff Assistant. In Corpus Christi, her volunteer work included the Symphony Guild, Driscoll Children's Hospital, the Junior League, and the Area Heritage Society. She was a director of the Pan American Round Table. In Taft, she was a member of the Woman's Club and the San Patricio County Historical Commission. She served as a docent for the Centennial House in Corpus Christi, and the Taft Blackland Museum. While her children were in school in Taft she volunteered at the Public Library and was a Girl Scout Leader and a member of the PTA.

Jean is survived by 3 of her children; Gail Ivey Kincaid (Brad), Dru Ivey Kincaid (T.C.) all of Fort Stockton and Ben E. (Trey) Ivey, III (Nancy) of Hondo; 7 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and youngest son, Mercer T. Ivey, Jr. (Tread).

A memorial service will be held in Taft, on Sunday, March 25, 2018, at 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.

Committal will be held in Fort Stockton at the East Hill Cemetery on Thursday, March 29, 2018, at 11:00 am with a reception to follow at the Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Charlie Marshall in Aransas Pass and Shaffer- Nichols in Crane, Texas.

A special thank you from the family goes to Mrs. Ivey's caregivers from National Nursing and Rehab. The staff at Wooldridge Place Nursing Center, and especially to Angie Hernandez and Estella Cisneros.
