Obituary

Janey Catheryn Mutchler, known lovingly to many as Janey and affectionately called “Oma” by those closest to her, passed from this life on July 16, 2026, after a journey marked by courage, strength, and selfless devotion. She was born on July 28, 1949, in Corpus Christi, Texas to John Thomas White and Mazelle (Cunningham) Ivey. From the beginning she carried the kind of spirit that would later define her life. Janey lived with a strong will, a warm heart, and a steady faith that guided her through each season of life with perseverance and determination.

Janey attended W.B. Ray High School and later, Del Mar College; where she earned her LVN license and began building a career devoted to caring for others. Early in her professional life, she served as a surgical nurse at P&S Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. She approached her work with seriousness and kindness, and those who knew her in those years remember her as someone who gave of herself freely and without hesitation. Her life of service continued as she later completed a successful career as the Deputy Chief Appraiser for the San Patricio County Appraisal District in Sinton, Texas.

On November 22, 1974, Janey married the love of her life, Joseph Fred Mutchler. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to devotion, partnership, and enduring love, and they celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary this past year. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and the simple joys that make a home feel full. Through the years, their bond remained strong and steady. Together they were active members of the Holy Family Catholic Church of Taft, Texas. In her faith, Janey lived with a quiet trust in God and a sincere appreciation for the blessings of family, friendship, and daily life.

Those who knew Janey best remember her as spunky, strong-willed, and full of personality. She had a special love for animals and was known for rescuing dogs and cats, taking in strays, and caring for pets that family members and friends were not yet ready to commit to. Her compassion extended beyond people to every creature she encountered, and her home and heart were often open to those in need of care. This tenderness, paired with her determined spirit, made her unforgettable to all who were blessed to know her.

Above all else, Janey treasured time spent with family. She delighted in hearing about the accomplishments of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she never missed an opportunity to brag about them. Her love for them was deep, proud, and unwavering. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother; and she poured herself into each of those roles with sincerity and joy. Her family was the center of her world. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and memories that will be held close for generations.

Janey was preceded in death by her father; John Thomas White; her mother, Mazelle Ivey; and her son, Billy Dale Mutchler.

She is survived by her loving husband, Joseph Fred Mutchler of Taft, Texas; her twin brother, John White of Corpus Christi, Texas; her sister, Gerry Carter (Buddy) of Corpus Christi, Texas; her brother, Jimmy Ashworth (Kathi) of Helotes, Texas; her daughter, Kimberly Zabel (Matt) of Ingleside, Texas; her grandchildren, Hailey Novack (Miles), Jacob Zabel (Jordan), Nathan Zabel, Ashley Mutchler (Selena), Jeremy Mutchler, Taylor Mutchler, Dylan Mutchler; and her four cherished great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love.

Though Janey will be deeply missed, her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who loved her. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, from 4:30 - 7:00 P.M., followed by a rosary, beginning at 7:00 P.M. at the Charlie Marshall Funeral home in Aransas Pass, Texas. A funeral mass will be conducted on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at 11:30 A.M. at the Holy Family Catholic Church of Taft, Texas. Interment services will immediately follow at the Coastal Bend State Veteran's Cemetery in Corpus Christi, Texas.
