Port Aransas

Gary Wesley Lunt, 74, passed away after a life defined by hard work, fierce loyalty, and a perfectly timed sense of humor. Born May 27, 1951, in Shattuck, Oklahoma, he arrived two minutes after his twin brother, Harry. Raised in Sunray, Texas, by Wesley and Lahoma Lunt, Gary developed the defining work ethic and stubborn streak that stayed with him.

After earning his BBA from West Texas State University in 1973, Gary and his first wife, Denise Hill, raised their children, Michael Wesley and Micha Dawn in the Texas Panhandle. He was a successful farmer in Sunray for many years. Gary loved the simple things: morning coffee at the Sunray Coop, long visits with friends, and riding motorcycles with his kids. A proud Christian, he loved to share his faith and his strong opinions.

Later in life, Gary was married to Von Ann Mercer for several years. He later married Elisa Imke, moving to Port Aransas to be near the water he loved. There, he reinvented himself, earning a patent for his underwater fishing light and becoming known as "The Light Guy". His green fishing lights can be found up and down the Texas Gulf Coast. He took tremendous pride in building a successful second career before officially retiring and passing the business to a close friend, who has continued the business after his retirement.

In his final years, Gary treasured time with loved ones, enjoying spirited conversations and keeping everyone on their toes with his sharp wit. The outpouring of love from friends across Texas is a testament to the man who never met a stranger and built lifelong friendships everywhere he went. Gary will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and quoted often. His life was full, fun, faithful, and entirely his own.

Gary is survived by his brother, Harry Lunt (Suzanne Lunt); his children, Michael Lunt (Deedra Lunt) and Micha Hooper (Scott Hooper); his grandchildren, Kaitlin Lunt, Keali Hooper, and Caden Hooper; and his nieces and nephews, Caleb Lunt (Andrea Lunt) and Jamie York (Chase York).

An informal celebration of life will be held at 361 in Port Aransas, from 3:00–6:00 PM on Thursday, May 21. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the First Baptist Church in Port Aransas.
