Ernestina Cochran, lovingly known as Ernie, passed away on January 26, 2026, in Corpus Christi, Texas, at 3:53 PM from complications related to Stage 4 lung cancer. Born on November 3, 1951, in Tulica, Mexico, she moved to the United States at the age of 12, initially settling in Chicago before relocating to Corpus Christi at 14.
Ernie’s mother, Ernestina Fernandez, served as the Mexican Vice Consul in both Corpus Christi and McAllen, Texas.
Ernie is survived by her husband of 45 years, Steve Cochran. Together, they forged a beautiful life, supporting each other's dreams and aspirations. Their remarkable love was a testament to their partnership. Ernie is also survived by her sister-in-law, Sandra Norrell, who regarded Ernie as the sister she always wished for. Additionally, Bobby George, who was like a son to her, along with a devoted circle of nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews from Steve’s family, each carry a piece of her heart. All were touched by her warmth and grace and are committed to continuing her legacy.
While we mourn her loss, we also find solace in the cherished memories of a woman whose vibrant spirit enriched our lives and our community. Ernie was known as the Mother Teresa of Rescue and the Queen of Rescue, having made an invaluable impact on the community by dedicating her life to the care and protection of animals. She began saving animals in the 1980s and founded Peewee’s Pet Adoption in the 1990s. Before her work in rescue, Ernie was a Licensed Real Estate Broker and a registered nurse specializing in heart surgery patients. She saved countless lives by finding loving homes for thousands of animals. Her unwavering compassion for those without a voice revealed the depth of her character, transforming countless lives and enriching ours. Her legacy of kindness and love will continue to thrive in our community, and thanks to her dedication, the Peewees rescue will carry on its essential work in her absence.
As we honor Ernie’s life, let us imagine the joyful reunion that awaits her in the afterlife. Picture her stepping into heaven, embraced by countless little dogs and cats who have crossed the rainbow bridge, their tails wagging and purring with joy. In that peaceful realm, Ernie will shine as brightly as she did among us.
Ernie was a radiant light in our lives, a source of joy and warmth that will be deeply missed. Her laughter, kindness, and indomitable spirit will echo in our hearts forever. We are profoundly grateful for the time we shared, the love she offered, and the invaluable lessons she bestowed upon us.
