David Sewell Gibson
June 20, 1944 - July 20, 2025
David Gibson, 81, of Rockport, Texas, passed away on July 20, 2025, leaving this world held by family and received by grace.
He was born on June 20, 1944 in Fort Worth, Texas to Lynn and Josephine Gibson. David grew up in Temple and Fort Worth. He opened Gibson Beauty Supply in 1966 at age 22 in Denton, Texas (on a loan and a prayer) selling beauty supplies, then wigs, falls, and toupees. Though bald, he hated wearing toupees unless it resulted in a sale. Ironically, absurdly, or perhaps confidently, he sold hair products with the wisdom of someone who'd once had some.
He later founded GBS Beauty Wholesale, acquired by Sally Beauty Supply in 1982, and went on to start Beauty Brokers Inc. in the Dallas/Fort Worth free trade zone. "We sold Consort hairspray by the truck load" he would say. Selling his "baby" in 1992 wasn't easy, but with his usual determination it proved successful.
David married Carla and they shared many years of marriage with an unbreakable bond and constant love. She helped him grow his business but anchored his life on family and faith. Together they raised four loving children: Candice, Amy, David, and Courtney.
Both had long loved Rockport, Texas, and moved there permanently in 1984. He enjoyed sport fishing, horse racing, and the arbitrary game of "Who sang this song for ten points?" He provided fully and faithfully, and his family carries deep gratitude for a life built on his love and effort. Reflecting on his life, he would often say that his guardian angel was always with him.
A man of strong opinions, brutal honesty, and unsolicited yet totally appropriate advice. A fiery spirit, but a heart just as quick to make amends. Affection measured in memories made, family vacations, and many meals paid for. He was a lover of sweets, especially PayDays and donuts. He took great pride in what he built, and the family he raised. In the words of a late friend said to his future son-in-law: "Some people play the game; some people run the game; David Gibson is the game." A legend in his time to those who knew him.
David is survived by his wife, Carla. Children- Candice (Tommy) King, Amy Gibson, David (Christy) Gibson, Courtney (Chase) Bechtol. As well as his nine and Callahan. grandchildren- Hannah, Cole, Cannon, Hudson, Gwyneth, Cecile, Stella, Corbin,
He's off to his next great adventure, likely offering advice to St. Peter about the length of the line or some inefficiency that he could "work out a yellow legal pad."
A Celebration of Life will be held on August 12, 2025 from 5:00-7:00pm at the Key Allegro Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, donate to your favorite charity, share a memory, tell a story-he certainly would have.
