Bruce Furlow

Bruce Furlow, age 93, passed away Monday, October 13, 2025 at his home in Port Aransas, TX. Born in Seminole, Oklahoma on December 26, 1931 to Mary Julia and C.H. Furlow, Bruce was preceded in death by his wife Barbara June Furlow and is survived by his sister JoAnn Allen of Tulsa, OK; son Bill Furlow, his wife Molly, and their two children June (based in Austin, TX) and Ancel in Corpus Christi; son Tom Furlow, his wife Krista, of San Antonio, TX and their two children Holly and Mason both based in Houston, TX.

After graduating from the University of Oklahoma with a Master’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering, Bruce settled in South Texas where he met his wife Barbara. In 1972 Bruce moved his family to Port Aransas from Corpus Christi where he worked as a petroleum geologist. He would continue to commute to downtown Corpus every day for 14 years. After the oil price collapsed in 1986, he took a job with Port Aransas Realty, where he would remain until retiring in 2017.

Active in the community, Bruce served two terms on the PAISD Board of Trustees beginning in 1976. In 1980, Bruce led volunteer efforts to establish a library in Port Aransas. That year the City Council appointed him the inaugural chairman of the newly formed Public Library Board. On April 21 of 1981 the William R. “Bill” Ellis Memorial Library officially opened. Bruce ceremoniously received library card number 1.

Bruce also served on the Board of Directors of the Nueces County Water Control and Improvement District 4 from 1992 to 2008. In 1993 he was elected President of the Board.

Bruce and his wife Barbara were avid offshore fishermen for decades. They accumulated many accolades. In 1982, aboard their 33’ Bertram “Pixie” Captain Bruce and angler Barbara won the Deep Sea Round Up Grand Championship with first place in the White Marlin and Sailfish divisions.

Bruce served as a Deacon of the Port Aransas Community Presbyterian Church from 1981 to 1984. He was a devoted husband and father and one hell of a fisherman.

Services will be held 2:30 p.m., on Wednesday October 22 at the Community Presbyterian Church in Port Aransas.
