Obituary

Betty Ruth Tijerina, 76, passed away on May 6, 2026 in San Antonio Texas. She was lovingly surrounded by her family until her very last breath. She was born to Ray and Benancia Villanueva in Turkey, Texas on January 4th 1950. Betty was the second of four children. She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ray; and sister, Virginia.

Betty grew up singing in Spanish with her father who played guitar and sang. Some of her happiest childhood memories were singing with her father. Betty attended Aransas Pass High School, where her love for singing continued. She joined the choir and quickly earned choir solos and won multiple singing awards. Upon graduation, she attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi to study music where she sang competitively in Italian, Spanish and English. Betty was a talented singer, with a beautiful soprano voice which had great clarity and range.

Betty married Frank Tijerina in 1969. Betty and Frank were happily married for 57 years. They created a life together; they had a family and loved each other through the good times and especially through the challenges life offered.

Betty was a devoted mother, wife and daughter. She worked as teacher’s aide for years and loved her students.

Every Sunday, she could be found singing with the church choir. She shared the gift of song at every opportunity; weddings, funerals, football games and other celebrations. If there was ever a mariachi present, you could bet that Betty would eventually join them in song. Her love of music was a true reflection on her joyful spirit and her ability to find happiness in every moment.

In 2005, Betty suffered a stroke which left her unable to talk, walk or eat. Frank tenderly and patiently cared for her, for 21 years. He held her hand and encouraged her through the many health setbacks that pursued. Betty gave her best effort and lived joyfully despite her disabilities.

Betty will be remembered for her enthusiasm for life, her devotion to her family and deep love of music and singing.

Betty is survived by her loving husband, Frank Tijerina; her children Melody, Frank Jr. and Victoria; her brother, Gonzalo; and the many family members and friends whose lives were enriched by her love, kindness and song.

A Memorial Mass will be held on June 19th at 10AM at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Aransas Pass Texas, followed by lunch at the Butter Churn to commemorate and celebrate the life of Betty Ruth Tijerina.
